The best time  to go whale watching in Mirissa is from  November to April.Ocean is rough during the off season which is from May to October.

 We recommend you should not book whale watching tours during off season as there is very rare chance of finding whale during the off season.

 

Mirissa  is a small coastal village  on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in the Matara District of the Southern Province.

Distance from Colombo to Mirissa is 170 km and it takes 3 hours to reach by bus.It is 2 hour and 30 minutes by train.

You can reach Mirissa from Galle city which is a world heritage site and a major tourist destination in Sri Lanka.Distance from Galle to Mirissa is 36 km.

There are lot of tour companies and hotels which arrange whale watching tours in Mirissa.

A whale watching safari can be around around 45 us dollars  per person.All whale watching operators charge more or less  this price.

Usually whale watching boat ride  starts at 6.30 am in the morning and can be easily arranged from all resorts on the coast of Mirissa.

Most of the whale watching tours takes average time of 4 hour but the time depends on various reasons.

 

Whale Watching in Trincomalee

Trincomalee is one of the most popular beach destinations in Sri Lanka,situated 262 km from Colombo.Trincomalee is known for it’s amazing surf.

You can travel to Trincomalee by bus ,train or you can hire a taxi.Travel time by bus takes nearly 7 hours and by train it is nearly 4 hours.

But Trincomalee is also celebrated as one of the whale watching spot in Sri Lanka.You can also spot hundreds of dolphins in the area.

Whale watching trip duration here would take around 3 hours.Most of the companies offer breakfast and lunch on the boat.

The best season to visit Trincomalee is between May and October.During this period you can spot Blue Whales and Sperm Whales that are considered to be some of the largest creatures
on earth.

Dolphin & Whale Watching in Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya in the North Western Coast close to the Colombo International Airport is a main resorts for Whale & Dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka.

Kalpitiya is becoming very popular for its presence of Sperm Whales and an occasional Blue Whale alone is a world class attraction
of marine life.

Kalpitiya is perfect for dolphin and whale watching, because you do not have to head out too deep into the ocean to catch a glimpse of them.

The best time for the Southern (and Western) seas is between November and April .

You may see Pods that have hundreds of dolphins often in Kalpitiya,especially near the Bar Reef, which is just a one-hour boat ride away.
