Elephants in Sri Lanka

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVEL AROUND SRI LANKA

Where To See Elephants In Colombo

There are no national parks or wild areas in or around Colombo City for seeing wild elephants. But if you still want to see elephants while you are in Colombo, there is one place where you can see elephants. That is the Dehiwala Zoological Garden.

The easiest way for someone to reach Dehiwala Zoo is to  travel by train from Colombo Fort to Dehiwala. It takes about fifteen minutes by train to reach Dehiwala Railway Station. The Dehiwala Zoo is located about 2km from there. Tuk Tuk ride from Dehiwala Station to the Zoo would save your time. Local buses run through this place.

The Dehiwala Zoo is open daily from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm. There are food stalls and a restaurant where you can get the food and drinks you need. If you go there in the evening, you can witness a very special event. That is, an elephant performance held at around 5.15 pm.

Many local and foreign tourists enjoy this event. It is a good chance for  you to see many of the talents of the properly trained elephants there.

However, if you are around Colombo and want to see elephants but you cannot afford to travel far, the Dehiwala Zoo is the best option for you.

“Bandula”, the oldest elephant in Sri Lanka among tamed elephants, lived for about 80 years and finally passed away while at the Dehiwala Zoo. That was in the year 2022. “Bandula” is a famous elephant that has attracted many tourists to the zoo.

It must be said that “elephant”, which ranks at the top of the world among animals with the best communication skills and sensitive emotions, is a wonderful animal that captures our eyes, minds and hearts.
