Where to eat street food in Colombo

Street Food is very popular now in Sri Lanka.

In a certain way, street food in Sri Lanka has become a new trend and a food culture. Like in many countries of the world, Sri Lanka is now a best place to enjoy street food. If you are a person around Colombo or visiting Colombo, you will find one place where you can enjoy street food,That is Aluhtkade.

Aluthkade street food area is located on Abdul Hameed Street which is not far from Colombo Railway Station and Colombo Central Bus stand. It is a ten minutes ride from Bus stand and Railway Station. It would cost as little as Rs.250 for a tuk tuk ride. If you have plenty of time ,you can walk to place looking around.

If you go there in your own vehicle, parking is not a big problem . But if you go on a holiday or weekend, I think it is better to go in a tuk tuk, as the place is crowded and you will find it difficult to park your vehicle.

This usually starts in the evening and lasts for a few hours catering to a range of tastes, with various combinations of local and foreign dishes.

There is one thing that should not be done right away. We should not jump into a heavy food (ex: biryani, friedrice) as soon as we get there. If you start with small, you can end with big with satisfaction.

If you take snacks, there are different types of sandwiches here. You can enjoy a special sandwich full of cheesy, creamy, thandoori chicken at a price of 500/- rupees.

If you buy sweets, you can have a variety of sweet experiences.

Panipuri is another famous food in Aluhtkade. They can be tasted in many ways like chocolate, spicy, sweet. All five pieces of these are priced below 600 rupees. There is a special type of panipuri here. It is “fire panipuri”. It is served with fire. .When you eat it, you are given a small cup of juice made from tamarinds to drink. It is really a new experience.

Burger is available filled with things like mozzarella cheese, tandoori chicken, and tomato sauce.

And smoky bites. That’s something special. You have to taste it by smoking it through your mouth and nose. It’s a little  hot.

And there was something new that I had never seen or eaten before. It was “ice cream cones” and “roll ice cream”.

There was another delicious dish that I couldn’t ignore, the coconut roti with goat “barbat”.
A piece of goat barbat is less than 150 rupees. A roti is about 50 rupees. When you mix the two, it is a spicy and tasty dish.

You can buy biryani and fried rice, mix rice, etc. “Bamboo Biryani” is also available

You can enjoy different types of drinks there Saruwat, Badam, etc.
“Badam” is made by adding almonds and milk, so it is a very nutritious drink.
Among the drinks, the most popular drink in Aluhtkade is the “one shot drink”. When they give it to you, you have to drink it in one gulp.

If you plan to stay one night in Colombo, do not forget to go and enjoy Aluthkade street food.
